Fallacies in Education: Why Schools Are Mired in Mediocrity ReviewIt's difficult to know where to begin when attempting to review this book. Trani and Irvine dissect our collective beliefs about education on every page, providing unique insight and decidedly powerful examples of not only what's broken, but how it got that way and how it can be fixed. More than mere criticism and high-level advice, this book elevates itself above simple theory, using the results from Oregon's Corbett Schools to underline concepts, with down and dirty tactical examples. It also presents all sides to a story, showing a level of level-fielded argumentation rarely seen in a book like this.
Yes, Corbett Schools face the same challenges (budget and otherwise) as most other public schools (some would argue that they face it even more-so), but the manner in which they address these issues is riveting. One of the most challenging aspects of the transformative potential contained in this book is how the authors tackle the fact that honesty is key for educators to build a quality school. Answers must be given to difficult questions, like, 'why do we send kids to eight different teachers every day when they enter sixth grade?', or 'what should our school focus on as we do not have the funds to be truly comprehensive?' No one wants to answer these questions, but Trani and Irvine tackle them head-on, in the latter example recommending that schools become masters at one thing, instead of stretching resources to the point of being mediocre at all things.
There will never be a way to satisfy all audiences, but this book shows how an educational system must move beyond its stakeholders and make the best decisions for its students. Decisions might not always be popular --especially when they go against the experiences of most stakeholders-- but they must be made.
If I have one criticism of this book it's that it could benefit from additional editing. There is a great deal of redundancy in the book, which may be intentional. If you're paying attention (the authors do a good job keeping you engaged), you shouldn't need to be reading summaries of topics you've covered before. This being said, the book does not stray from its purpose and delivers a combination of common sense and documented results that no other educational book can offer. I've read a tremendous amount of educational theory over the past year and the topics covered in Fallacies are covered expertly, with engaging storytelling that is far more than convincing --it's backed by a rare truth.Fallacies in Education: Why Schools Are Mired in Mediocrity Overview
