Terminator Gene - Ian Irvine ReviewAn action-packed thriller, very fast-paced and with believable characters. Irith Hardey is a great heroine - smart, sassy and likeable. The storyline is well researched and plausible. I loved the beginning scenes in the posh suburbs along beautiful Sydney Harbour, now drowned by the rising seas after part of the Antarctic ice cap melts, and the furious chase in the flooded tunnels under the London Docklands had me biting my nails all the way.
Not so convinced about Irith's sex scene with Thornton, though. What on earth did she see in him?
And a fantastic ending in a future New Orleans completely surrounded by twenty-foot high levees to keep the ever-rising seas out, and still at risk from hurricanes. For a book written some years before Katrina hit New Orleans, it's amazingly prophetic - and has a much better ending than when the real hurricane struck.Terminator Gene - Ian Irvine OverviewBook 2 of Ian Irvine's classic eco-thriller trilogy about the consequences of global warming and unstoppable climate change, Human Rites. Security knocks at the door and Irith Hardey's world is torn apart. Her mother, Jemma, is arrested for an unspeci?ed crime and disappears. Irith, a young gene researcher, is thrown onto the streets. With nothing but the clothes on her back, she ?ghts to survive in a cruel and predatory world. The sexually inexperienced Irith soon falls prey to the mysterious Bragg. He spirits her away to a Britain slowly collapsing under the sanctions of the Global Congress. There she is ?ung into a violent battle between Security and a cabal of rebels, only to ?nd herself caught up in the rebels' underground assault on a Congress data centre. They steal ?les containing the code for a deadly terminator virus, but no one can decipher it. Hunted through the ?ooded tunnels under the London Docklands, the group ?ees to New Orleans, slowly drowning under the rising seas, to destroy the laboratory where the virus is being made. As the hurricane of the century bears down on the sinking city, Irith struggles to crack the secret of the virus before it wipes out all humanity. (First published several years before Hurricane Katrina). Praise for Terminator Gene. “Ian Irvine is a great storyteller." Australian Bookseller and Publisher. "One of the best genre writers around - Irvine's considerable narrative powers are brought to bear in a grim near-future vision of plot and counter plot." Hobart Mercury. Shortlisted for the 2003 Aurealis Award. The Human Rites Trilogy - The Last Albatross, Terminator Gene & The Life Lottery. “With its sobering blend of frighteningly well researched catastrophic environmental change, triggering immense global sociopolitical upheaval, Ian Irvine's Human Rites trilogy is the most important work of Australian science fiction yet published in this country." Rob Jan, Sci-Fi Radio Zero-G.
