The Amateurs: A Novel (P.S.) ReviewNever before have I been so moved as to write a book review on Amazon (although I love reading other reader's reviews). I was about to share this book with a friend via Facebook and was stunned to see there are no reviews. The story is hysterical and brilliant - and if I'm borrowing words already printed somewhere on the cover (I've lent mine out already) so be it. Rarely have I escaped into a story so utterly and entirely, nor has a book ever made me laugh so hard. There's no great redeeming message or revelation, just a delightful jaunt through a somewhat improbable journey that I'd gladly take again. I have laughed out loud, full on fits of laughter, merely at the memory of the book.
Here's the most interesting part - I have rarely enjoyed reading a "funny" book. And I read every genre I can get my hands on. This book has it all - beautifully constructed story written with very real skill and talent, a cast of characters guaranteed to have some difficulties, some of which are uproariously funny and some of which are unnerving. The book kept me guessing but always pleasantly surprised, and anxiously checking to see how many pages were left before my journey was done.
In short - if you enjoy reading, buy this book. Then promptly share it with a friend - preferably by asking them to buy a copy and support the author. I've not read any of John Niven's other books, but that's now on my to do list.
