Case of the Musical Cow ReviewThe 'Foreword' dedicates this book to Dr. Alan R. Moritz, a pathologist who lectures at the Harvard Medical School Seminars on Homicide Investigation. Gardner was impressed by his lectures using a conversational tone of voice. Gardner notes the practice of conventional detective novels that build up a private detective at the expense of the police force, and will not do so in this book. Gardner will portray the State Police as he witnessed them.
Rob Trenton visits Paris. Three of the people on his ship meet him and invite him to join a car trip. Rob trains dogs; valuable bloodhounds trail a person, expendable Dobermans to attack a found criminal. Rob is interested in Linda Carroll, who sketches pictures. They travel to Switzerland, and meet Merton Ostrander at a country inn. Swiss farmers store hay in their attics, providing insulation. Their cows each have a bell tuned with a distinctive sound; an owner can locate and identify each cow by its sound. Ostrander travels with them to Paris. There Rob experiences an acute illness that puts him in a hospital. Linda and Ostrander leave him to drive to a ship in Marseilles. But Rob decides to take a plane that gets him to Marseilles before the ship sails. Ostrander is extremely and incredulously surprised! On board ship Rob helps to calm and train a dog bought by Dr. Herbert Dixon; later Rob is given this dog.
When the ship lands in NY two Customs men search Rob and his luggage thoroughly. After Rob drives off with Linda's car he makes a surprising discovery. The next morning Rob discovers that Linda's car has disappeared! When Rob goes to tell Linda about the stolen car, he finds that Linda was not the real Linda Carroll at that address. Rob's car conks out and a friendly stranger offers him a ride. Rob soon learns that he was kidnapped for questioning about the missing car. [The continuing adventures of Rob reminds me of one of Eric Ambler's early stories. Its an interesting thriller with similar naive mistakes.] The story about the shooting on the boat is Gardener's way to illustrate the fallibility of circumstantial evidence when it is misinterpreted.
Chapter 22 explains plea bargaining. Chapter 23 tells about the tests in the crime laboratory. Chapter 24 shows how a prosecutor can coach a witness. Dr. Herbert Dixon questions Rob about the shooting, then asks to be questioned by Rob's lawyer (Chapter 25). The Preliminary Hearing starts in Chapter 27. The facts brought out by Dr. Herbert Dixon's examination of the corpse leads to the release of Rob Trenton. And so the story continues to its conclusion. Justice triumphs in the end. Gardner wrote a non-Perry Mason mystery that is just as complex and surprising at the end. But the example of the exoneration seems less believable.Case of the Musical Cow Overview
