In Nature's Temple, the Life and Art of William Wendt ReviewThis large and lengthy book (12" x 9", 300 pages) is a treasure trove of rich, beautiful paintings. There are 253 color reproductions of Wendt's beautiful work. Eleven reproductions are full page which allow the viewer a great perspective into how Wendt applied paint and the textures he built up. There are several essays about California painting and Wendt's biography but they aren't as useful as I might have hoped (since there is very little specific information about his art) but it is interesting to get a historical perspective on Wendt's life. The brief essay sections include thirty-five photos (mostly black and white).
But I didn't buy this book for the writing. I bought it hoping for lots of examples of Wendt's painting. I wasn't disappointed. The reproductions are simply beautiful. They are crisp and generally quite large on the page. It would have been better to make the book a horizontal format since most of Wendt's paintings, being landscapes, are a horizontal format but often there are two paintings to a page so there is plenty to look at. I have seen many of Wendt's paintings in magazines over the years but have never seen his color so bright and vibrant as in this book. I haven't seen a lot of his originals but I get the sense that these reproductions are very accurate.
If you love landscapes by Wendt, landscape in general, especially colorful paintings with lots of rich, thick paint buy this book. It is a little expensive compared to other books in my library but few are a beautiful as this sumptuous volume.In Nature's Temple, the Life and Art of William Wendt Overview
