None Dare Call It Treason Review4 rainy days on Cape Cod, therefore this book: a rollicking adventure yarn about the Maquis and Britain's Special Operations Executive on the Cote d'Azur in 1942-1943. Clearly the author knows Nice and environs, the French, and perhaps the SOE.
What's a tad astonishing is that Charles de Gaulle and what we Anglophones know as the Free French are the villains throughout, even beating up the hero when he finally escapes safely to London.
Also not clear: why does the Vichy police (Milice) go after the hero maquisards? These focus on the Germans as the true enemy, but in the course of this book haven't done anything other than think about fighting them. Noticeable that all the characters talk a lot more than one would expect from conspirators.
However, fine vacation reading for Cote d'Azur lovers.None Dare Call It Treason Overview
