The Irvine Ranch (Huntington Library Classics) ReviewThis edition is a 1984 reprint of a book that first came out in 1950 and was updated in 1962. It briefly touches upon the natives who lived on what would become the Irvine Ranch, before jumping into the Spanish/Mexican Era and ownership and management by three generations of Irvine's. A testament to this book is that it is cited in almost every work regarding Irvine that I have found (and nothing has really been printed in the last 15 years). However because this book was first printed in 1950, the book seems to stop rather abruptly. Even with an "epilogue" and some minor updates, it feels as though the rest of the story is missing. When reading it is important to remember that several events won't happen on the Ranch for decades. For example the 101 won't become the 5 until 1964, UCI won't be founded until 1965, the City of Irvine won't be incorporated until 1971 and to say nothing of amount of development since then, the Orange County airport won't be renamed John Wayne until 1979, and MCAS El Toro and MCAS Tustin won't close until 1999.The Irvine Ranch (Huntington Library Classics) Overview
