Life Lottery - Ian Irvine ReviewDefinitely the best written book of Irvine's Human Rites trilogy. A well researched, action-packed thriller set in a near future world of disastrous climate change. What would our world be like if either the Greeenland icecap melted, as it's already begun to do, or parts of Antarctica? Hundreds of millions of refugees would be flooded and out and would have nowhere to go but into the West, and what would happen then? Global depression, the rebirth of fascism, or world war?Irith Hardey, some years older than in Terminator Gene, makes a convincing marine scientist, but then she should be - that's the author's profession. I wasn't absolutely convinced by the politics behind the finale - I can't see world leaders agreeing to use the world's entire nuclear arsenal to blow a vast channel through Panama, no matter how dire the world's climate was getting - but i have to say, as someone who appreciates spectacle, that when 30,000 megatons went off it was the Big Bang to end all Big Bangs.
