April Fool and other Antipodean horror stories ReviewThere is a lot of enjoyment to be had in April Fool but there is one thing that truly makes this collection special, the combined talents of authors John Irvine and Tracie McBride. Both authors have differing writing styles, while John Irvine has a comedic, almost cynical style to his words, Tracie McBride has a much darker, brutal style to her writing and as soon as you get used to one you are verbally assaulted by the other. It makes for a very enjoyable reading experience that never lets you get too settled in.
From John Irvine's side we have the tales April Fool in which a group of hard drinking men decide to take their dirt bikes out for a little outback excursion only to find their plans less than enjoyable, Anyone for Dessert? where a couple are treated to a dream vacation that's just too good to be true, and Almost Remembering Allan, a tale that shows a little bit of a darker side to Irvine.
From Tracie McBride we have the tales The Harvesters, the story of a world struggling with famine where a distraught father sells his two children to a woman whose cruelty is only matched by her vindictive nature and The Light Box, think True Love meets Law and Order: SVU.
